Studio Jux started a factory in Kathmandu, Nepal to maximise their social-economic impact in one of the poorest countries in the world. With their foundation, studiojux.org, they collected 50,000 euros and used it to help their employees, families, neighbours, suppliers and other people in the Nepali community. Because of the earthquake that hit in 2015, the Nepali community and textile industry can definitely benefit from the extra work and income more than ever

Studio JUX cooperates with other suppliers focused on women empowerment. Approximately 15% of the studio JUX collection is hand knitted in a women empowerment project in Nepal. The women empowerment project offers women the opportunity to hand knit the garments at home, as it is standard for women stay home after they are married in Nepali culture. Their jewellery is also handmade by another women empowerment project. They cooperate with the Association for Craft Producers (ACP), a non-profit fair trade organization that works together with low income craft producers, primarily women. These women earn wages to supplement family income and improve the overall standard of living

Studio Jux's collections offer a wide range of handmade contemporary designs: jewellery from recycled brass, hand knitted vests, hand woven items, paper products and rush baskets. They work together with highly skilled and experienced craftsman dedicated to deliver the best quality possible

As a factory owner, Studio Jux takes good care of their employees and offers living wages and social security. They work according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) principles, which promotes social justice and human and labour rights and believes that world peace can only exist when built on social equality and fairness. The company offers their employees a contract that includes days off to spend with family and friends and all team members have a steady income that does not depend on the amount of work generated for them. Girl of the Earth is 100% women-owned and women manufactured. The founder Ruby, grew up in downtown Manhattan to antique-dealer parents, so "I inherited and cultivated relationships with vintage suppliers, flea market owners, eccentric grandmas, and just plain hoarders, who I buy gorgeous old fabric from. This supply chain is super unconventional and requires my life-long expertise, and a lot of luck, but basically I'm just really really good at shopping" says Ruby

How the founder Ruby says, Girl of the Earth is a one-woman show!

Every piece is made from vintage fabrics dating 1930-1999. Ruby, the founder, sources these personally using her lifelong knowledge. These leftover pieces of fabric are so small that other brands would never bother to use them. Ruby, the founder says "I understand why— it's a super time-intensive business model. I am always spending way too much time negotiating prices, inspecting fabrics' condition, and giving my seamstress complex instructions about which remnants are for which styles"

This is a somewhat stretchy long-sleeve tee, with a subtle boat neckline and thumb holes. Slightly cropped length perfect for seamless tucking into vintage jeans or our chelsea skirt. Use as a layering piece under something sleeveless or mix with another print. Matching scrunchie included!

Our entire vintage-fabric-womenswear collection is made using textile remnants dating 1930-1989, meaning each piece has zero impact on the environment and is what we like to call few-of-a-kind™. We only found enough of this stretch blend (circa 1970s) to make 4 tops! Ethically made in NYC by our legendary seamstress. BTW our sizes may run slightly small. This top best fits a 33 inch bust in XS, 35 in S, 37 in M, 39 in L, and 41 in XL (and check out our made-to-order page if we're sold out or if you'd like something custom). Annsofie wears a size M slightly oversized.

Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality and environmental value. 

Upcycling artists are inspired by the textile waste they see, which is almost an unlimited resource at this point. They create with the intention to use what is already here. This process is important in the circular fashion movement, because it makes use of discarded textiles, giving these materials second lives. 

Because discarded textiles are not typically sheets of fabric, but rather articles of discarded clothing, a lot of creativity is required to transform materials into new fashionable pieces. This challenge is exciting for upcycling artists, as they are driven and inspired to create with what is in front of them and often don’t have much to lose in the process, since discarded materials are readily available and cheap. Because of this, upcycled clothing is often unique as each piece has been thoughtfully crafted into a new garment.

This product is made by creatively upcycling materials that would otherwise go to waste. This makes better use of resources like deadstock fabrics: leftovers from big production that are saved by re-using them.

Once the package is received, girl of the earth'll refund you less return shipping cost ($10 for domestic orders, or $12-$28 for international orders). For exchanges, please simply return your unwanted item and re-purchase a different one. 
Make sure the item is unused, in the same condition that you received it, and in its original packaging (and alongside its free matching scrunchie, if applicable). Please note final sale items are non-returnable.
