To date, Patagonia has funded five projects looking at solutions to ocean pollution from microfibers. They charged their own materials development team to identify fiber types and construction techniques that minimize shedding. To aid that effort, they commissioned a study from North Carolina State University to help them understand which characteristics in fabrics lead to microfiber release—and to developed a rapid test methodology to assess the potential of fabrics to shed during laundering. Since 2015, they've been investigating biodegradable synthetic fibers as a solution to microfiber shedding from washing garments

Since spring of 2020, Patagonia uses polybags to package their products, made of 100 percent recycled content which is Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certified

Organic cotton is cotton grown in pesticide-free environments, with sustainability in mind. 

Organic cotton farmers can keep soil healthy for longer, as the fertility of the soil is not compromised. This also means they only grow GMO-free seeds. Additionally, organic cotton farmers do not have to expose themselves to harmful chemicals, prioritizing workers' health, the health of the people in their communities, and the natural ecosystems they operate in. 

Organic cotton is a bio-based material, making it biodegradable, fully composting after it has retired from use.

Organic cotton is a sustainable solution as it is grown without the use of pesticides, from seeds which have not been genetically modified, unlike regular cotton. It is also more sustainable for cotton farmers, protects their land and is more respectful for people.
