I Was Sari works with 170 artisans from disadvantaged parts of India where work opportunities are rare for women with no previous work experinece, with kids, or euneducated women. Their artisans earn regular pay and flexible working conditions which grant them peace of mind and freedom to plan a stable future for their families. Outside work, they receive medical and financial support, attend classes in English and soft skills. Through this exposure, they understand their worth, rights and potential. The brand was born from a love of handcrafting. Each of their pieces are intricately handcrafted by artisans around the world who’ve been passing on their traditional artisanal practices for years, helping to preserve this craft. I Was Sari sources their raw materials in the colorful markets of Mumbai. They create their pieces from used saris and dead stock fabrics, crafting vibrant products that are sold worldwide while reusing material that is already here
