What on Earth can you do on Earth Day?
April 22nd, aka EARTH DAY. Maybe it is a little less famous than Christmas or Easter but this is definitely a day you want to celebrate in 2021 with us. Giulia comes from a background of international development and humanitarian emergencies and she shared some thoughts on Earth and this special day fully dedicated to it.
As I prepare to celebrate this year’s Earth Day, I’ll take you with me back in time: when the initiative started in a university campus. This way, we can understand together why this day is so highly anticipated by many climate activists and companies with a sustainable mission.
The first ever Earth Day took place back in 1970, when a US Senator, Gaylord Nelson, organized a series of workshops in multiple US college campuses to spread awareness about climate change and environmental sustainability. Led by Denis Hayes, a young activist, they decided to settle on April 22, right in between Spring Break and final exams, in order to reach as many students as possible. This marketing move was proven effective, as the initiative was received with much enthusiasm. From that moment on, the movement started growing, implementing new programs and initiatives, to finally become a global movement in 1990, reaching 141 countries.
Created with the intention to educate the youth about the threats of pollution and overconsumption, Earth Day remains true to its core value, even to this day.
Here are my personal “actions” that I’m doing today during Earth Day. Some of them are part of my daily routine – but if they are not yours, join us, today.
Go plant-based for a day with me
In my opinion, following a plant-based diet is a great eco-friendly move. And even though I love animals, they are not the only reason to do it in my perspective. The meat industry is heavy on its carbon footprint and deforestation, and Earth day is about giving a break to Mother nature right? Now, going vegan is not easy, but to me, reducing is caring! Little ideas: you could try Unburgers! It looks like a burger, tastes like a burger but is so much more eco friendly! Or you could also try my personal favourite, oat milk for your daily cappuccinos. So, here’s a cool Earth Day Challenge: you could join me and go vegan for a day and share your thoughts on plant-based alternatives with your friends?
Organize a park, or beach, clean up initiative
To me, one of the great ways to celebrate our Earth is clean up initiatives! To find them, you can always check out your local organisations to see if they have anything coming up, or even organize your own! I love recruiting all my family and friends for a little outdoor fun (and very productive activity). Even better now with the warmer weather!
Although we cannot fix the problem of plastic pollution alone, clean ups are a great way to get started. Bonus point: how about a post clean-up session picnic (even better if plastic free!).
PS. you can organize it today for the weekend!
Educate yourself—and your circle
There are tons of resources online to learn more about sustainability, conservation, pollution, and recycling. Learning about our planet does not have to be boring! I personally love watching documentaries and movies about the animal planet and the different initiatives going on to protect it.
There’s nothing better than grabbing a bag of popcorns, something to drink, a couple friends —only if permitted—and make a movie night out of it! I find the David Attenborough – A Life On Our Planet documentary especially fascinating and informative. Plus, lots and lots of cute baby seals featured.
Granted, not everyone lives close to a walking/hiking trail, and some of us are still in lockdown. But if you have the opportunity, going out and exploring is also a great way to celebrate our Earth! I can stay here all day and tell you how precious our planet is, but truthfully, the best way for you to find out is to go out there and check it for yourself.
Being in nature has been proven to reduce anger, fear, and stress, and I don’t know about you, but I never refuse some peace and serenity. So for sure this weekend I’ll grab my sneakers, comfy clothes and sunscreen, and go enjoy the outdoors! Your mind and body will thank you later.
Form new fashion habits
So, in this day, you can try something new like renting or buying second hand instead or new; or give your support to science by choosing apple skin leather alternatives.
Under the same roof
There are so many ways to celebrate Earth Day. We came a long way since it was a local US initiative run by a progressive Senator and a young activist.
Today, Earth Day is a global celebration uniting us from different cultures, religions, ethnicities, and political beliefs. Earth Day is the time to remember that, no matter who we are and where we come from, we all walk the same soil, under the same sun and we will always share the same planet.
